BOEREWORS, CHUTNEY & CHEESE BRAAI BROODJIES

  • 600 g thick boerewors
  • 12 slices of thick cut, farm-style white bread
  • 200 g butter, melted
  • Mrs Ball’s Chutney
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 250 g gouda, grated
  • 250 g mozzarella, grated
  • salt and pepper
  • chives, chopped to serve

To make these mouthwatering broodjies, you gotta braai the boerewors over hot coals till the outside is nice and caramelized, but the insides still gotta be a bit pink. Once it’s done, let the wors cool down and then slice it into discs.

Now, mix those two lekker cheeses together in a bowl. Lay out the slices of bread and give ’em a good brush of butter. On six of those slices, spread a layer of chutney, and then add those juicy boerewors slices. Top it off with some sliced onion and a big heap of cheese. Make it lekker, bru!

Now, close up those broodjies and give the top of each one a brush with some more butter. Load ’em up into a sandwich grid and place it butter-brushed side down over the coals on medium heat. Don’t forget to brush the other side with the rest of the melted butter, keep ’em moist and tasty.

Braai them slowly for a few minutes on each side, till they turn a beautiful golden color all over and the cheese melts like a dream. When they’re done, take ’em off the grid and let the flavors meld. To serve, cut each broodjie in half and maybe have some extra chutney on the side for dipping. Voilà! A true South African treat ready to enjoy with friends and family.
